Kim's Alzheimer's WALK/RUN TO REMEMBER
As you may or may not know, both my mother and father are living with Dementia. My mother was diagnosed with Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH); the dementia symptoms of NPH can be similar to those of Alzheimer's disease. My father was diagnosed with Vascular Dementia. Alzheimer's disease is the most common type of demenia and it is not new to my family as my mother is the fourth sister in her family to receive such a diagnosis.
Postlethwaite & Netterville, APAC (P&N), encouraged all employees to give to the community and volunteer via CPA Volunteer Day. Last week, I was one of 114 P&N employees (in Baton Rouge, Metairie and Lafayette) to do so and elected to volunteer for Alzheimer's Services of the Capital Area (10 Parishes) and spent my time (with three other co-workers) at Charlie's Place Activity and Respite Center in Baton Rouge. Charlie's Place is a program for individuals with early to mild stage Alzheimer's and Dementia related disorders designed to provide cognitive simulation and social interaction while giving CAREGIVERS a much needed break.
We socialized and/or worked along side the participants (Mr. Ray, Mr. Floyd, Mrs. Lois and Judge Bill) to clean out and replant the raised garden bed on the back patio, joined them for Chair Yoga led by yet another volunteer, baked tea cakes and particpated in cognitve memory games. While in the kitchen, we were talking about different ways to cook eggs and the next thing I know, I was asked to give an impromptu "Egg-in-a- Hole" cooking demonstration. Happy to report that Mr. Ray and staffer Dederick gave a thumbs up for presentation and taste. ;-)
Please join me and the P&N team in supporting Alzheimer's Services WALK/RUN TO REMEMBER as they offer valuable education, resources and services to support those attempting to cope with Alzheimer's or relatd disorder. If you can't walk or donate funds, please consider offering to volunteer at a local organization, nursing home or offer to relieve a family member/friend that is a CAREGIVER (regardless of the disease or circumstance) at some time in the near future. YOU can make a difference.
